A Message From Our Principal
As we begin the 2019-2020 school year, we celebrate BHS/IB/SA’s growth to a B school and are excited about the coming year! We appreciate the confidence you have placed in us as educators, and we are passionate about providing world-class experiences for our students within a safe, high-quality learning environment. As you may be aware, this year, our students and staff were able to move into our beautiful new Science & Technology addition, a building equipped with innovative equipment that will provide opportunities for our students not previously available.
Through the many programs offered here at the Home of Champions, our students are provided a variety of opportunities. Our excellent academics provide students with the chance to engage in rigorous courses in preparation for colleges and universities. Additionally, our outstanding academy programs provide students with hands-on experiences that prepare them for the workforce or technical college. We have expanded our elective offerings at BHS and look forward to students’ increased engagement in both performing and visual arts. Athletic and sports events, along with other extra-curricular programs, are also available to BHS/IB/SA students, enabling them to participate in skill-building and character-building activities.
As the year moves forward, we invite you to get involved in your child’s education through an avenue that interests you. Whether it be through mentoring, tutoring, or simply volunteering to assist in your child’s classroom, YOU are an important part of our Yellow Jacket family. We would love to have you participate in our School Advisory Council or PTSA Board—opportunities are endless if you would like to be involved!
We appreciate your support and look forward to the coming year!

Bartow High School traces its institutional heritage to the one room log schoolhouse built in 1858 by pioneer Redding Blount. The community at the time was called Fort Blount after the small civilian stockade built for refuge during the Third Seminole Indian War. The primitive school served the needs of the local pioneer families. The community was also known as Peace Creek. The first professional educator was Dr. Daniel Waldron whose salary was paid for by Blount. The advent of the War Between the States interrupted the educational pace, and brought a new name to the town. Fort Blount received its own postal service and the community was renamed Bartow. Bartow was the name chosen to honor Confederate General Francis Bartow of Georgia. He was the first high ranking officer to die in battle for the southern cause.
What Makes Us Different?
Bartow High is a strong academic institution that provides students with multiple academic paths through traditional and innovative classroom settings. We are a “B” school and always strive to become an “A” school. As a wall-to-wall academies school, Bartow High School has multiple nationally-certified academies such as our culinary academy housed in a state-of-the-art culinary building. Our Future Educator academy is also nationally certified, preparing students to be future classroom teachers. BHS is home to strong medical, firefighting, criminal justice, agricultural and construction academies. The Academy of Design is the current home to our award winning YJP in school television news production. Our students have a myriad of opportunities and programs to choose from. Bartow High School is also home for two other schools, the Bartow International Baccalaureate School and the Summerlin Military Academy. The coexistence of the three schools on one campus is what makes our school truly special.
Bartow High School is the Home of Champions as exemplified by many of our extra-curricular programs. Our band program has received multiple superior ratings and is comprised of students from all three schools. The band is nationally recognized, has marched in Washington, D.C., and has performed as a wind symphony in Chicago. Furthermore, the BHS band added yet another honor to their outstanding program—they will be traveling to Ireland in 2021 to march in the original St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Our co-ed cheerleading program is nationally ranked. Additionally, we have the first public high school lacrosse team in the district. Other sports opportunities include girls’ and boys’ soccer, swim, cross country, golf, football, volleyball and tennis. Our basketball and softball teams qualify for state almost yearly.
Bartow High Students also have a unique opportunity to partake in two international exchange student programs that have been running for many years. One program hosts Dutch students in the fall and travels to the Netherlands in the spring, and the other program hosts students from Germany in the fall and travels there in the summer.
Bartow High School truly is the Yellow Jackets Home of Champions!
